As webmaster of this site, I get plenty of feedback and questions regarding
The Donna Reed Show, but the most frequently asked question
is where one can purchase episodes on DVD.
As of this writing, the only official DVD release
came back in 2003 when a single-disc release was given away by General
Mills in boxes of cereal of all things!
The
single-disc release did not come with artwork and contained the episodes
“Four on the Floor” from 1964 and “No More Parties”
from 1965. Why these two episodes were chosen is a mystery because neither
one is anything spectacular or of particular importance.
The disc is out-of-print, but copies do turn up
occasionally at online auction sites. You can expect to pay anywhere
from $10-25 depending on how fierce the bidding gets.
Upon doing a web search, you may come across sites
offering DVD sets of The Donna Reed Show for sale. Be warned—there
is no official DVD release other than the aforementioned single-disc
from 2003. The sets being offered are bootleg DVDs, which means they
are homemade unofficial releases.
A few people have transferred their old VHS tapes
of the show from Nick-at-Nite to DVD and are offering those for sale.
The quality is generally what you would expect from homemade VHS. There
are the usual tracking problems, fuzzy picture if the tapes were recorded
in SLP mode and occasional drop-outs.
One seller I have encountered does indeed have
130 episodes for sale, but many of them on the set are incomplete. The
shows start nearly halfway in with an on-screen prompt stating “Due
to the length of tonight’s news program, we now join The Donna
Reed Show already in progress” etc.
There are rumors that the show will soon see an
official release. As soon as this in indeed confirmed, it will be posted
on the main page of my site so everyone can pre-order safely and securely
from Amazon.com.
